Our Happy Birth Day
Taiwan/ 2018/ 82min/ DCP/ Color
In choosing how they want to deliver their child, few women in Taiwan have options other than the standard procedures at hospitals: they push on you, they cut you, they’re quick to perform surgeries. There is a small network of women working to change this. This is a documentary about the 0.1% of women in Taiwan seeking alternative, gentler birthing methods, and the midwives and doulas helping them.
Anais is an aromatherapist who rejects intrusive medical practices. Before becoming pregnant, she was active in advocacy theater. On stage she played the role of a woman forced into a C-section by an in-law so her baby would be born at an auspicious time. In real life, her pregnancy takes an unexpected turn as complications arise, obstructing her plan for a natural home birth. She’s told that a C-section is her only option.
Daisy is pregnant with her third child and is an advocate for gentle births. A midwife helps her with a water delivery in the comfort of her own home surrounded by close family and friends. Unfortunately the newborn doesn’t live past the third month. But undeterred by this experience, Daisy becomes a doula to help other mothers.
